THE HISTORIC ALEXANDRIA PRESERVATION FUND
The Grants Program of the
HISTORIC ALEXANDRIA FOUNDATION, INC.
The Historic Alexandria Preservation Fund was
created to provide grants to assist
in the preservation and conservation of the tangible
artifacts of Alexandria's heritage, as well as to foster scholarly
research on the city's cultural and architectural
history. A total of $15,000 is available for grant awards annually.
Who May Apply
Individuals, non profit associations and
organizations, and private non profit and public museums
are eligible for grant awards. In order to apply for a
grant, an applicant must be a member of the Historic
Alexandria Foundation. Information about membership can
be obtained by calling or writing the Foundation or by downloading a membership application from the first page of this site.
Eligible Projects
Projects eligible for consideration include, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Restoration, repair, maintenance or improvement
of historic properties in the City of Alexandria,
which are open to the public or serve a public
function.
- Conservation of artifacts in private non profit
or public museum collections within the city of
Alexandria.
- Historical, architectural, or archaeological
research of a particular structure, property, site or
district which may enhance the goals of preservation
in the city.
- Scholarly research conducted on Alexandria's
architectural or cultural history.
Awards and Notification
Individual grants of up to $5,000.00 will be awarded at the discretion
of the Historic Alexandria Foundation, Inc. (HAF), administrators of
the Fund, based on the nature, purpose, and merits of
the project proposal. Grant awards in some instances will
be required to be matched by a similar amount of money
raised from other sources. The amount and date of the
award will be determined by HAF. Grantees will be
notified by U.S. mail by an officer of the Fund.
Deadlines for Submitting Applications
Applications are judged yearly by a seven-member committee selected
by HAF from its Board of Trustees and membership, and including the Director
of the Office of Historic Alexandria and at least one
outside expert in historic preservation. The deadlines
for receipt of applications is May 1, 2009. Grant
applications will be reviewed by the Fund committee,
with awards announced within 60 days after the
aforementioned deadlines. Formal presentation of the
awards will be made at the annual meeting of the
Foundation in June of each year.
Reporting Procedures
Depending on the size of the grant and projected length of the
project, partial payments will be made on the basis of
interim progress reports. A final report from the
grantee concerning the use of the grant funds will be
required within thirty (30) days after completion of the
project. Interim and final reports will be presented at
the Foundation's annual meeting.
